If you enjoy building things with your hands, you might consider picking up the craft of woodworking. Creative and practical, woodworking can be a fulfilling hobby or trade. These tips can help you get started if you’re new to woodworking.

Invest in the Right Tools

You should assemble all the necessary tools before beginning your first woodworking project. You can ask professionals at your lumber shop for guidance. Safety is important, so wear goggles, gloves, a dust mask and ear protection. Set up your work environment with a bench and some sawhorses. You will likely need wood glue and brushes for your project. For hand tools, you should consider buying a bench plane, a chisel set, a 6-inch square, a tape measure, a rubber mallet, screwdrivers and various clamps. Woodworking also requires saws, including hand saws, coping saws and miter saws. In addition, you can get power tools, such as drills, sanders, jigsaws, circular saws and table saws.

Start With a Small Project

Starting your woodworking journey with a smaller, more manageable project increases the likelihood that you will finish and create something tangible. You can try building a jewelry box or birdhouse as your first undertaking. Other beginner-friendly projects include rocking horses, music boxes and chessboards. Try making a gift for a loved one to motivate you. You can use the plans from your first project to help you determine which tools and materials you need to buy first. In general, you should only purchase the supplies you need to complete your next project.

Build Your Skills Over Time

With each project you complete, you can build your woodworking skills. You can purchase woodworking project plans for increasingly complex designs. Furthermore, education materials like video courses and woodworking magazines can guide you through various techniques. You can also learn a great deal from the professionals at your lumberyard or woodworking shop.

Woodworking is a rewarding hobby that anyone can learn. If you’re a beginner, start small and work your way up.
