More on the Amazing CNC Machine!

About a year and a half ago, I did a blog on our CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine and promised another blog on the services we can provide you—which will save you time and money. Sorry, I’m a bit late.

One of the best ways to explain this is by reviewing some actual orders we’ve completed for customers.

Custom Built Closets

One finish carpentry company was building out custom—and quite elaborate—closets for high-end homes. Previously, they would buy the material (unfinished maple plywood) and cut it at the job sites as needed. His team spent a lot of time laying out the pieces to be cut, working toward accuracy and minimizing waste.

On this order, the job called for 75 sheets of maple plywood, so he inquired about us doing all the layout and cutting. He used his own plywood and delivered it to us. We entered the shapes and quantities into the computer, which automatically laid out the pieces to be cut on each sheet. Our worker placed each sheet on the CNC router table, which has vents that allow a powerful vacuum to hold the sheet firmly in place—ensuring 100% accuracy.

Our customer was thrilled, telling us that each of the hundreds of pieces was precisely cut in a small fraction of the time it would have taken his shop to do a manual layout and all the cutting. As a bonus, the waste was negligible, and he wound up overestimating the number of sheets he would need!

Complex Stairs

Another customer was building a complicated set of curved stairs for a mansion in Maine, including one for an oval room. It would have been a tedious job to transfer the shop drawings to the actual site, so we fed the drawings into the CNC computer and produced templates for everything—again, speeding up the process and ensuring perfect accuracy.

We were also given some very irregular “cookie slabs” for coffee tables. They were too big for a jointer, so the CNC machined them to uniform thickness. Without it, I’m not sure how the task could’ve been completed. We then ran the cookies—now of uniform thickness—through the planer and wide belt sander for perfect tabletops!

By the way, we have a number of these cookie slices in stock, in a variety of sizes and species. (They are cross-sections of logs.) Customers have been making everything from cutting boards to tabletops with them for a unique touch!

Custom Kitchen Cabinets

Finally, we have a number of customers who do custom kitchens. They used to fabricate their boxes, and sometimes doors and drawers, themselves. Now, we produce all the parts for the kitchen cabinets, and they only have to handle the assembly and installation. This enables them to take on more projects simultaneously because they’re not tying down their cabinetmakers with building boxes.

The potential uses of the CNC router are endless. Need to match an existing curved window-top casing? No problem. And in every case, we will save you money!
