Characteristics of a Good Carpenter
Carpentry is a dangerous profession. Woodworking involves a variety of different tools, including saws, drills, and nail guns. In the workshop, it is important to keep in mind that it only takes one moment of poor judgment to lose an eye, a finger, or more. As a carpenter, you must have certain qualities that help you maintain the safety of your workshop.
Tidiness
It is essential to keep your woodworking table free of clutter at all times. Extra items strewn around can easily get caught or tangled. The ground must also be free of obstacles, as this can create a tripping hazard. Less mess means less opportunity for disaster to strike. When your work area is clean, this can also help to clear your mind.
Patience
If you have ever heard someone say “measure twice, cut once,” the idea of patience with regard to woodworking will make absolute sense to you. Sometimes, taking the longer route will be more beneficial in the long run.
The idea of patience does not just apply to measuring. Double-checking that your tool is turned off, making sure to put everything back in its place, and reviewing instructions before using a tool or building a piece of furniture are all ways that having a little patience can save you stress later on.
Common Sense
In your woodworking shop, common sense is something you must have to maintain a safe environment. So many injuries are the result of neglecting to place the safety shield back on a saw, leaving a power tool near a puddle of water, forgetting to wear safety goggles or other similar lapses in common sense. Think twice about each action you take, asking yourself if it could potentially result in an injury.
These three traits are the base of successful carpentry. If you can stick to these guidelines, you may have what it takes to become a master of woodworking.
